About Norwegian Yacht Charter
Oslo's Original Fjord Cruise Company
Norwegian Yacht Charter (NYC) is Oslo Fjord's leading provider of fjord cruises and sightseeing. Since 1946, we have been showing guests the pearls of the Oslofjord from our historic sailing ships. As the original developers of fjord sightseeing in Oslo, we combine authentic maritime heritage with modern service and sustainability.
About the business
Norway Yacht Charter is the largest operator of fjord cruise boats and sightseeing boats in the Oslo Fjord. Our history dates back to the end of the 19th century. Today we offer charter, sightseeing and ferry trips in the Oslo Fjord. Our most popular activities include two-hour fjord sightseeing, a 50-minute mini-cruise and a three-hour evening cruise. A prawn buffet is included in the evening cruise. Ferry operations between Rådhusplassen and Bygdøy also form a large part of our business.
We are an attractive choice for tourists and local guests who want to experience the Oslo Fjord. Around 500,000 passengers travel on our boats every year. On an ordinary summer day, around 70 employees are at work. This makes us one of Oslo's largest employers of summer jobs for young people.
Several providers of fjord sightseeing have appeared in recent years. However, we are the original developers of this product. We have been showing guests the pearls of the fjord since 1946! Despite increased competition, we remain unique. Our focus on Norwegian history and traditions at sea sets us apart.
Our traditional sailing vessels date back to the early and mid-20th century. They are carefully maintained to serve as living historical heirlooms. These ships are not just means of transport. They are authentic examples of Norwegian maritime history. You can experience this while enjoying the beautiful fjord landscape.
History
In 2000, a partnership was formed between three companies: Norway Yacht Charter (NYC), Båtservice Sightseeing AS and Skibs AS Bygdøfergene. The Bygdøy ferries had operated their route between Rådhusplassen and Bygdøy since 1898. Meanwhile, Båtservice Sightseeing AS had operated sightseeing services since 1946. NYC took over the daily operations of these companies. We also continued with vessel rental for corporate and private events. Our long history means we have been an important part of Oslo's harbor scene for over a hundred years. Today we are the largest operator of fjord cruise boats and sightseeing boats in the Oslo Fjord. We also operate the Bygdøy ferries.
Our vessels include old sailing ships measuring between 20 and 35 meters. We also have exclusive entertainment ships and modern sightseeing boats. Companies and private groups use our boats regularly. Norwegian and foreign tourists enjoy our services. We also serve social gatherings connected to Oslo conferences. Through combined services, we can accommodate up to 600 guests. We arrange between 200 and 250 private parties each year. Many loyal customers return to us year after year.
Environment and sustainability
Norway Yacht Charter AS is ISM-certified. This is an international standard for safety management and pollution prevention. We follow all guidelines described in the ISM code.
Our commitments include:
- Ensuring safe ship operations and a safe working environment
- Establishing protection against all identified risks
- Continuously improving personnel skills regarding safety management
- Preparing for emergency situations involving safety and environmental protection
The security system also ensures that:
- Mandatory rules and regulations are followed
- Applicable norms, guidelines and standards are met
The Norwegian Maritime Directorate audits our company every year. This ensures compliance with these guidelines.
We are proud partners with Oslofjorden Friluftsråd. This organization works to protect the environment and species diversity in the Oslofjord.
We are also becoming certified as an Environmental Lighthouse Company (Miljøfyrtårn).
Our boats use an average of only 0.29 liters of diesel per passenger per trip. This is the lowest measurement among fossil-fuel operators in the Oslofjord. The low emissions result from boats running at a slow pace on low-sulfur diesel. Therefore, our sailing ships are a sensible environmental choice.
Furthermore, our Bygdøy ferries' diesel consumption equals the average consumption of 18 passenger cars per year. We help relieve road traffic in Oslo city center. This means we offer a more environmentally friendly option for guests traveling to and from Bygdøy.
Standard tours depart and arrive at Rådhusbrygge 3, in front of City Hall. Passengers are encouraged to use public transport to reach us.
